CBN for Sleep: What We Know
A plain look at CBN as a sleep aid — what's understood, and what isn't yet.
CBN (cannabinol) is a minor cannabinoid found in cannabis, increasingly marketed as a natural sleep aid. Here’s an honest look at what’s currently known.
What CBN is
CBN forms as THC ages and breaks down, and it’s typically present in cannabis products in much smaller amounts than THC or CBD. It’s usually sold as an isolated extract in sleep-focused products.
Why it’s marketed for sleep
Brands frequently describe CBN as sedating or relaxing. Some of this reputation comes from older, small-scale studies and anecdotal reports rather than large, independent clinical trials.
What the evidence actually supports
Published, independent research specifically on CBN’s effects on human sleep is limited compared to better-studied options like melatonin. Much of the public information available comes from preliminary studies or brand-funded research; we’re not aware of a large, independent clinical trial confirming CBN’s effectiveness for sleep.
What to check before trying a CBN product
Third-party lab testing, exact dosing per serving, and sourcing transparency vary significantly between brands. Checking whether a product discloses independent lab results is a reasonable first filter. See our Slumber CBN review for one example, or our CBN vs. Melatonin and CBN vs. Magnesium comparisons.
Speak with a doctor before starting any new supplement, especially if you take medication or have an existing health condition.
