Why Do I Wake Up at 3 AM?

Middle-of-the-night waking has different causes than trouble falling asleep — here's what tends to be behind it.

Waking in the early hours and struggling to get back to sleep is a distinct pattern from difficulty falling asleep initially, and it’s worth treating differently.

Common contributors

Alcohol close to bedtime, an overly warm room, stress hormones that rise in the early morning, and light leaking into the room are all frequently cited contributors. For some people, it’s simply a byproduct of going to bed too early relative to their body’s actual sleep need.

What tends to help

Consistent sleep and wake times, limiting alcohol in the evening, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool are common starting points. Some people find a brief, boring activity in dim light (rather than checking a phone) helps them fall back asleep faster than lying and worrying about it.

When it might be more than sleep hygiene

If waking during the night is frequent, prolonged, or paired with loud snoring, gasping, or daytime sleepiness, it’s worth raising with a doctor — these can be signs of conditions like sleep apnea that go beyond general sleep hygiene.
